EasyPay for MetroCards

In the next few months, the MTA will be phasing out the EasyPayXpress program as part of the transition to our new contactless fare payment system, OMNY.

Applications for new EasyPay MetroCards are no longer available, and pay-per-ride EasyPay MetroCards are no longer usable to pay a transit fare. If you have an EasyPayXpress 30-Day Unlimited MetroCard:

  • After October 31, 2024, your EasyPayXpress account will no longer replenish.
  • You must swipe your card by November 8, 2024 to activate it and receive your full 30-day unlimited-ride benefit.
  • The program will end on December 8, 2024, and at that time, your EasyPayExpress MetroCard will no longer be valid to pay a transit fare.
  • Account balances of less than $2.90 may be used to cover one ride when in a Suspended Pay-Per-Ride mode, after which the account will have a zero balance.

If you're a Reduced-Fare customer, you can continue using EasyPay for now.

If you have questions about this change, please contact the EasyPay MetroCard Account Service Center online or at 877-323-7433. The office is staffed 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays (except holidays) and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. In off hours, the number goes to an automated system that can help with common problems.

You'll have more flexibility with your fare payments with OMNY, our contactless payment system. You don't have to sign up or download an app to use OMNY—simply use your contactless credit or debit card, smartphone, or wearable device to tap and go.

OMNY also offers a weekly fare cap. Pay for 12 rides using the same device or card in a seven-day period, and additional rides within the week are free.

There's no upfront cost, and you don’t need to worry about buying or refilling a MetroCard.

If you still prefer to use a dedicated physical card, you can also use an OMNY card like a pay-per-ride EasyPay MetroCard. Register for an account and use your credit or debit card to automatically reload your account. If you're an existing EasyPay customer, you'll receive an OMNY card in the mail. Or, you can always buy an OMNY card at a retail location or vending machine.

30-Day Unlimited Ride cards

Swiping your card for the first time in each 30-day period activates it. Near the end of the 30-day period, we’ll send you an email saying that we are about to renew your card. You’ll have the option to switch to a pay-per-ride card.

If you keep your card unlimited, we will charge the payment method on file $132. Your first swipe after that starts the next 30-day period.

We automatically replace an expiring MetroCard one week prior to the expiration date.

Unlimited ride cards can be used on:

  • Subways
  • Local, limited, and Select Bus Service buses

Unlimited ride cards cannot be used on:

  • PATH trains
  • Express buses
  • AirTrain JFK

Lost, damaged, or stolen cards

Your best option is to immediately report lost, damaged, or stolen EasyPay MetroCard online. You can also call us at 1-877-323-7433.

You will not be liable for unauthorized charges that occur after you have notified us. We will immediately deactivate your card to protect unauthorized charges. We will send a replacement card in the mail.

It takes about 15 business days to process and mail a replacement.

If you want to contest a charge on your account, contact the EasyPay Account Service Center. Charges not questioned within 120 days of the fare posting will be considered valid.

Managing your card

Don’t try to refill your EasyPay MetroCard in a regular MetroCard vending machine. It could damage the card and you won’t be able to add value to it.

You also can’t add value at a station booth.

Like any other MetroCard, your EasyPay MetroCard eventually expires. The expiration date is on the back of the card. We will send you a replacement card a few weeks before your old one expires. Please destroy your expiring card immediately.

Payment issues and closing your account

If your credit or debit card declines payment, your MetroCard may stop working. We will send you notice if your payment method fails. If your balance falls below zero, we may close your account. If we close your account, we might not be able to reopen it. You will have to create a new one online. We recommend adding a second credit or debit card to your account in case something happens to the primary card.

You may end your account at any time by emailing the EasyPay Account Service Center or calling us at 1-877-323-7433. After all rides are posted, we’ll refund the remainder of your account. If you have an activated unlimited card, it will stop working when you end your account. We recommend you end your account near the end of the 30-day period to take advantage of the remaining time on the card.
