Hugh L. Carey Tunnel Closed Sunday, Sept. 24, for the Annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk NYC

Motorists Are Advised to Allow for Additional Travel Time and Consider an Alternate Route

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Bridges and Tunnels today announced the Hugh L. Carey (HLC) Tunnel will be closed on Sunday, Sept. 24, from 7:45 a.m. until approximately 3:00 p.m. to accommodate the New York City permitted annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk NYC which commemorates FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller’s run through the tunnel from Brooklyn to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

In advance of Sunday’s event, one tube of the tunnel will be closed from 10:00 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, through 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24. One lane will be open in each direction in the remaining tube during this time.

Additionally, beginning at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 24, there will be no access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from local streets in Brooklyn. Access to the Manhattan-bound HLC Tunnel from Brooklyn will only be available via the Gowanus Expressway until 7:45 a.m. 

The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk NYC, an independent fundraising event, begins in Coffey Park on Dwight St. in Red Hook, goes through the HLC Tunnel, and finishes in Manhattan at West St. and Murray St. The event retraces Firefighter Stephen Siller’s footsteps and honors those who died on 9/11.
