49th Station to Receive Renovations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews completed functional and aesthetic renovations at the 7 Av station in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. This work is part of New York City Transit’s Re-NEW-vation Program, which utilizes planned weekend service outages to perform upgrades, repairs, and enhanced cleaning in stations within a 55-hour window, providing customers with overhauled stations when service interruptions end on Mondays.
Over the last weekend, workers scraped, primed and painted the entire station. Other station enhancements included installing new LED lighting to brightening darkened areas, replacing the iconic stairway subway globes located at station entrances, removing outdated signage, completing repairs to boards that protect the platform from damage caused by trains brushing against it, ensuring drains are clear, and removing unnecessary water drip pans. In addition to customer facing areas, employee facilities including breakrooms and bathrooms were deep cleaned, renewed, and repaired.
“Through the Re-NEW-vation program, stations across the system are receiving the enhancements, repairs, and deep cleans customers have been calling for in survey after survey,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “While service was suspended on the and for needed track replacement, dozens of transit workers gave 7 Av a total facelift: repainting the entirety of this large station, replacing degraded concrete in the mezzanine, and refreshing station lighting, to deliver customers a cleaner, safer station. NYCT will continue to make the most of weekend shutdowns to improve the customer experience and continue pushing forward on our North Star of faster, cleaner, safer.”
In surveys, subway customers consistently cite station cleanliness as a core driver of overall satisfaction. Station re-NEW-vations are performed at stations with lower cleanliness satisfaction in direct response to customer feedback. The Station Re-NEW-Vation Program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience.

7 Av station is the 49th station to be enhanced, with upcoming re-NEW-vations planned at the Junction Boulevard station in Corona, Queens and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in Brooklyn.
