The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that switch replacement work will begin on the 6 Avenue line. These switches near West 4 St allow trains to move between the uptown local and express tracks. As a result, there will be changes to service on the lines beginning Monday, May 15, at 5 a.m. through Monday, July 3, at 5 a.m.
Customers are advised of the following service impacts:
Between May 15 and July 3, customers should expect their uptown commutes on the lines to be scheduled to take an additional two minutes. There will also be one fewer train operating during the morning rush hour, and two fewer trains and one fewer train operating during the afternoon rush. In addition, (express) trains, which normally operate express between Church Av and Jay St in Brooklyn, will operate local during this period.
Weekends [11:45 p.m. Friday, May 26 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 30; 11:45 p.m. Friday, June 2 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 5; 11:45 p.m. Friday, June 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 19]
For three weekends, there will be no Bronx-bound service on 6 Av between West 4 St and 59 St-Columbus Circle, and no Queens bound service on 6 Av between West 4 St and Roosevelt Av in Queens. trains will operate express as normal in Queens. Uptown trains will be rerouted via the in Manhattan between West 4 St and 145 St, and uptown trains will be rerouted via the between West 4 St and Queens.
- Northbound trains will run local on the 8 Av line between West 4 St and Roosevelt Av/Jackson Heights
- Northbound trains will run local on the 8 Av line between West 4 St and 145 St
- Northbound trains will run express between Canal St and 145 St
- Customers can use Southbound/Downtown and trains to access skipped stations.
- Transfer between an uptown and downtown at 59 St-Columbus Circle for stations between 7 Av/53 St and 14 St
- Transfer between an uptown and downtown at Roosevelt Av-Jackson Heights for stations between 14 St and 21 St – Queensbridge
- Customers can also use the train to transfer between 8 Av and 6 Av on 42 St and the L train to transfer between 8 Av and 6 Av on 14 St, as well as nearby 7 Av or 8 Av service in Manhattan
- Customers at 6 Av stations can take a southbound or train to West 4 St for a northbound or
Between 11:45 p.m. on Friday, May 13, and 5 a.m. on Monday, May 15, uptown trains will operate local between Broadway-Lafayette and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr.
Between 11:45 p.m. on Friday, May 20, and 5 a.m. on Monday, May 22, and 11:45 p.m. on Friday, June 30, and 5 a.m. on Monday, July 3, uptown trains will operate express between Broadway-Lafyette and 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr.
Weeknights
Weeknight overnight reroutes will occur between April 24 and July 14. Work will also occur during two weeks between June 5 and June 16. Between 9:30 p.m. and 5 a.m. those nights, service will operate as follows:
- trains will operate express in both directions between 145 St and Canal St
- trains will operate express between 145 St and Canal St
- trains will operate local between 205 St and Coney Island-Stillwell Av and operate via the and lines between 59 St/Columbus Circle and Coney Island/Stillwell Av
- trains will operate normally
- trains will operate local between 21 St-Queensbridge and Coney Island and operate via the in Manhattan and via the in Brooklyn
- trains will operate normally
- Free buses will run between West 4 St and Grand St and between West 4 St and East Broadway
