The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that SIM23 and SIM24 service has begun on Staten Island. The MTA assumed operation of the two express bus routes on Monday, Jan. 3, giving the Authority full operation of the Staten Island Express Bus Network.
The SIM23 and SIM24 express routes provide service to Midtown Manhattan from Annadale, Huguenot and Prince’s Bay, with five morning trips and six afternoon trips on each route. Timetables can be found at https://new.mta.info/schedules/bus/si.
“This is historic day is the result of a lot of hard work to get the full Staten Island Express Network under the MTA umbrella,” said Craig Cipriano, New York City Transit Interim President. “All Staten Islanders can now reap the benefits of the improved SIM Network, while new customers can now take advantage of features like OMNY to pay their fare and use the MYmta app to track their route.”
“Bus riders can expect the same level of reliable service on and off Staten Island,” said Frank Annicaro, Acting President at the MTA Bus Company and New York City Transit Senior Vice President of Buses. “New York City Transit will monitor service and make schedule adjustments as needed to ensure that SIM23 and SIM24 customers receive the best possible commuting experience.”
Prior to today the bus routes were operated by Academy Bus under contract with the City of New York. Under the new arrangement with the MTA, the City of New York will cover the capital and operating expenses net of the farebox revenue and other revenue sources, such as advertising, and NYC Transit will manage operation of the routes.
Bus frequencies will remain the same although there will be slight modifications to the schedule and routing. Schedule and route information is available at mta.info or by calling 511. Customers who use the SIM23 and SIM24 route will be able to use OMNY and track their bus routes through the MYmta app.
Due to significantly low ridership, the Outerbridge Park and Ride SIM24 bus stop is no longer being served. Customers can use the Huguenot Park and Ride instead, which is located on Drumgoole Road East at Huguenot Avenue where SIM24 service is available. The Hylan Boulevard at Luten Avenue bus stop is being served by the SIM24 instead of the SIM23. The SIM24 also serves a new stop at Amboy Road on Huguenot Avenue.
In response to public input, the SIM23 bus stop on Hylan Boulevard at Poillon Avenue has been retained. This is currently being done as a detour and will be reflected in the MYmta app starting on March 27. The SIM23 and SIM24 continues to serve the remainder of their current stops on Staten Island and in Midtown Manhattan.
