The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews completed functional and aesthetic renovations at the Atlantic Av station in East New York, Brooklyn. This work is part of New York City Transit’s Re-NEW-vation Program, which utilizes planned weekend service outages to perform upgrades, repairs, and enhanced cleaning in stations within a 55-hour window, providing customers with overhauled stations when service interruptions end on Mondays.
Over the last weekend, workers cleaned and replaced the iconic stairway globes located at entrances. Other station enhancements included removing soiled bird netting, repainting stairwells, and installing new anti-slipping treads where needed. Concrete tripping hazards were also repaired, and new LED lighting was installed, brightening darkened areas. The station also received a fresh coat of paint after transit workers scraped peeling paint and primed surfaces. In addition to customer facing areas, employees also received new additional storage options, and locker rooms were deep cleaned, renewed, and repaired.
“As critical work has been conducted throughout the subway system this summer, NYCT has been hard at work, completing re-NEW-vations at over a dozen stations and ensuring that customers return to a cleaner, visibly enhanced environment following a weekend closure,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “As riders return to transit this fall, they can count on NYCT continuing to push forward on our North Star priorities of faster, cleaner, and safer service for customers.”
In surveys, subway customers consistently cite station cleanliness as a core driver of overall satisfaction. Station re-NEW-vations are performed at stations with lower cleanliness satisfaction - in direct response to customer feedback. The Station Re-NEW-vation Program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience.
"I applaud Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) for completing the 'Re-NEW-vation' at the Atlantic Avenue station,” said Senator Roxanne J. Persaud. The 'Re-NEW-vation Program' has provided a cleaner and safer transportation system and just in time before children return back-to-school and post-summer subway ridership increases.”
Atlantic Av station is the 48th station to be enhanced with an upcoming refurbishment planned at 7 Av Station in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. In total, New York City Transit plans to complete 50 “re-NEW-vations” by the end of the year.
