45th Station to Receive Renovations
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced crews completed much-needed aesthetic and functional renovations of the Sprint St station in Lower Manhattan. This work is part of New York City Transit (NYCT)’s Re-NEW-Vation Program, which utilizes planned weekend service outages to perform upgrades, repairs, and enhanced cleaning in stations within a 55-hour window, providing customers with overhauled stations when service interruptions end on Mondays.
While planned structural maintenance took place, Spring St’s iconic decorative subway tiles were repaired and replaced. Customers will also notice a fresh coat of paint after transit workers scraped peeling paint and primed surfaces. Additional renovation work included new LED lighting installations, graffiti scrubbed away, stairwells deep cleaned, and ceiling and floor concrete repairs. In addition to customer-facing improvements, employee facilities also received enhancements, cleaning, and repair work.
“Re-NEW-vations exemplify New York City Transit’s mission to work smarter and deliver faster, cleaner and safer service for the millions of customers who ride the subway every day,” said New York City Transit President Richard Davey. “From Spring St in Lower Manhattan to stations across Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, we are delivering cleaner, brighter, better stations to customers, improving their experience in the subway system.”
In surveys, subway customers consistently cite station cleanliness as a core driver of overall satisfaction. Station re-NEW-vations are performed at stations with lower cleanliness satisfaction, in direct response to customer feedback. The Station Re-NEW-Vation Program is one of the major initiatives in New York City Transit’s Faster, Cleaner and Safer plan to improve the subway customer experience.
“I’m so glad that the Spring Street C/E stop was included in the MTA’s plan to create cleaner, safer, more aesthetically pleasing subway stations throughout the transit system,” said Assembly Member Deborah J. Glick. “The Spring Street station is a hub for tourists enjoying Greenwich Village, SoHo, Hudson River Park, and other Lower Manhattan attractions, as well as for residents who rely on the for their daily commutes. New Yorkers and visitors alike should feel that the subway system is comfortable and welcoming, and I applaud the MTA for this Re-NEW-Vation initiative.”
Spring St station is the 45th station to be enhanced with an upcoming refurbishment planned at Canarsie-Rockaway Parkway station on the train in Canarsie, Brooklyn. In total, NYCT plans to complete 50 “re-new-vations" by the end of the year.
